Dr. Ian Duncan to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

Department of Animal Biosciences Professor Emeritus Ian Duncan has been named the recipient of the 2019 Frederic A. McGrand Lifetime Achievement Award from Humane Canada.  Humane Canada brings together SPCAs and humane societies from across the country.

Dr. Jennifer Ellis

New animal systems modelling researcher

The Department of Animal Biosciences is pleased to welcome Jennifer Ellis as an assistant professor in animal systems modelling. Ellis began in her role on April 1, 2019.

In this role, Ellis will establish a research program on the integration of multiple sources of data related to nutrition, physiology, genetics and behaviour of animals in mathematical models for the purpose of improving performance, product quality, animal health and welfare, and/or the natural environment.

Midian Nascimento Dos Santos Awarded the First Aviagen Poultry Genetics Scholarship

Midian Nascimento Dos Santos, a Ph.D candidate under the supervision of Dr. Stephanie Torrey, has been awarded the 2018 Aviagen Poultry Genetics Scholarship, Aviagen's first scholarship in cooperation with the Canadian Poultry Research Council (CPRC). Midian's research is focused on evaluating the use of broiler chickens with slower growing genotypes as a means to improve animal welfare and facilitate sustainable poultry production.

Dr. Filippo Miglior

Filippo Miglior Joins Ontario Genomics

Dr. Filippo Miglior has joined Ontario Genomics as Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President, Sector Innovation and Programs. Dr. Miglior will continue to serve as Adjunct and Associated Faculty in the department, a role he has held since since 2004. Prior to Ontaro Genomics, Dr. Miglior was the Chief, Research and Strategic Development at the Canadian Dairy Network (CDN).

Mehdi Sargolzaei

Mehdi Sargolzaei Hired as Director of Genetic Research and Technology at Select Sires

Mehdi Sargolzaei has recently been hired as the Director of Genetic Research and Technology at Select Sires, an industry leader in providing superior dairy genetics and reproductive management solutions. Dr. Sargolzaei has been an Adjunct and Associated Graduate Faculty member in the Department of Animal Biosciences for over 10 years and will continue in this role to carry out research projects and advise students in addition to his new appointment.
